Captain Don Walsh and Sven Lindblad, along with Gigi Brisson, joined the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) Accelerator at Sea, a six-day voyage through Alaska that kicks off the 2019 Second Wave cohort of the SOA Ocean Solutions Accelerator. This summer is the first time in U.S. history that Alaska is surrounded by an iceless ocean as a result of climate change.
Accelerator at Sea is part of the Ocean Solutions Accelerator program launched by SOA to accelerate 100 ocean technology startups by 2021. The Ocean Solutions Accelerator program identifies innovative entrepreneurs from around the world to help them scale their solutions to the ocean’s greatest challenges. For the first time, SOA will begin its 8-week program by bringing the 15 entrepreneurs selected to the 2019 cohort together with other oceantech entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and select media aboard the Accelerator at Sea in southeast Alaska.
The Accelerator at Sea set sail from Juneau, Alaska, in partnership with Lindblad Expeditions, aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird on August 28 and will disembark in Sitka, Alaska on September 2, 2019. Each day at sea will be filled with exploration that integrates into a cutting-edge curriculum, aimed at fostering personal and professional development. Captain Walsh, Mr. Lindblad and Ms. Brisson will participate in interactive sessions and site visits during the expedition to engage with SOA’s 2019 cohort in order to help them transform their solutions into scalable businesses.
Captain Walsh’s professional life has been almost entirely in the design, manufacture, and operations of undersea systems. For the last 30 years, Ms. Brisson has invested in many high-tech companies and continues to identify and invest in emerging technology and platforms, especially those oriented toward social good.
