
Ocean Elders announced today that David E. Shaw, Managing Partner of the Black Point Group LP and Co-Chair of the Aspen Institute High Seas Initiative, has joined as an Ocean Elder.
Throughout his career, David has been a leader in environmental conservation, serving as the founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, trustee of the National Park Foundation, founder of Second Century Stewardship, and currently as the co-chair of the Aspen Institute High Seas Initiative with fellow Ocean Elder Dr. Sylvia Earle. He has also served as Treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, chair of The Jackson Laboratory, a director of Maine Medical Center, Curiosity Stream, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, US-Israel Science Commission, a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School and the Explorers Club, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, YPO, and other organizations.
David’s business creation, leadership, investment, and board experience includes IDEXX Laboratories (founder, CEO), Ikaria Pharmaceuticals (founding CEO, chair), and Vets First Choice (co-founder, chair) among many others. He has been awarded honorary degrees by Colby College, Bates College, Maine College of Art, and the University of Southern Maine. David was inducted into the Teddy Roosevelt Society, and IDEXX was inducted into the Life Sciences Foundation’s Biotech Hall of Fame in 2008.
He was also honored at the 2017 New York Restoration Project Hulaween Gala, he was named Wave Maker at the 2016 Blue Ocean Film Festival, and the executive committee of the Sargasso Sea Alliance (SSA) were named “2013 International SeaKeepers of the Year” by The International SeaKeepers Society.
