On October 5th and 6th, five Ocean Elders and an OE Advisor presented at the 2017 Our Ocean conference hosted by the European Union. (A second OE Advisor and the CEO also attended.) The Our Ocean conference, which began in 2014, brought together high-level participants from more than 100 countries to strengthen the fight against marine pollution and promote marine protected areas, reinforce the security of the oceans, and foster blue economy initiatives and sustainable fisheries. In total, 437 commitments were made by governments and businesses with more than Euro 7 billion pledged. H.S.H. Prince Albert II delivered a keynote to open the conference, followed by Dr. Sylvia Earle, who discussed exploring and sustaining the ocean for life. On day two, H.S.H. Prince Albert II once again delivered the opening keynote (this time, in French) and H.M. Queen Noor began the afternoon session with a keynote that elevated the connection of ocean health to global peace and security and called for a multi-faith initiative. Later on in the second day, José María Figueres moderated a panel on climate-related impacts on the ocean, which was followed by a session on ocean leadership with President Tommy Remengesau, Jr., along with Ocean Elders Advisor Kristina Gjerde as the “scene setter”. Video highlights of the conference can be found on the Our Ocean website. Next year’s conference will be hosted by Indonesia, followed by Norway in 2019.
