For decades, Prince Hussain Aga Khan has been a passionate advocate for safeguarding the natural environment, with particular attention to the marine world. He has been actively engaged with the work of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) on issues such as disaster risk reduction and emergency management, the built environment, environmental issues, and combatting the impact of climate change. Prince Hussain serves on various boards of the AKDN, including the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee (ECC), the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), while supporting the work of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) and the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES).
As an award-winning wildlife photographer, he devotes most of his art to ocean photography, using it to raise awareness about threatened species and ecosystems. His photography underpins his passion for wildlife and ecosystems, and he uses this medium to inspire people to fall in love with nature and to encourage behavioural change around the exploitation of natural resources. Multiple photographic expeditions over three decades have led to extraordinary archives, covering various geographical areas and habitats as well as many species, both marine and terrestrial.
Through his numerous exhibitions, publications and talks, Prince Hussain has created a global platform to raise awareness around the need to protect fragile ecosystems and increasingly rare species. He established his conservation organisation, Focused on Nature, in 2014 to support conservation, advocacy, and research efforts towards responsible stewardship of wildlife and natural habitats. Focused on Nature partners with globally renowned organisations mainly around the preservation of endangered species, oceans and rainforests.
His photographic exhibitions, The Living Sea and Fragile Beauty, shown internationally, aim to inspire admiration for wildlife and to motivate audiences to protect it. His most recent exhibition, Fragile Ocean, captures fascinating moments that illustrate the beauty of the ocean and the increasing fragility of its ecosystems. Collections of his photographs have been published in five books, Animal Voyage (2004), Diving into Wildlife (2015), Fragile Beauty, The Living Sea (2022) and Marine Encounters (2025). He has also exhibited his photography at international conferences and at educational and cultural institutions.
Prince Hussain is a board member of Mission Blue, a member of the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation’s Council for Hope, of the National Geographic Hubbard Council and of The Wild Dolphin Project’s scientific advisory board. He is a partner of the Shark Conservation Fund, a patron of the Manta Trust, an Ambassador for the Natural History Museum, London, and one of Marevivo’s Cavalieri Per Il Mare (Knights for the Sea).
