In today’s Sidney Morning Herald, Ocean Elder Graeme Kelleher released an Op-Ed, Now, more than ever, Carmichael mine needs to be rejected, after an Australian Federal Court Ruling ruled to uphold a former federal environment minister Greg Hunt’s approval of the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin. The court’s ruling also stated that the responsibility for the environmental impact of the mine was that of the environmental minister.
In his Op-Ed, Mr. Kelleher called on “Josh Frydenberg – the new Minister for Environment and Energy – takes this responsibility seriously enough to stop the mine from proceeding.”
The Great Barrier Reef has sustained massive bleaching for the last few years as a result of climate change and the opening of the Carmichael mine “will create 4.7 billion tonnes of climate-polluting carbon dioxide over the proposed life of the mine, wiping out Australia’s efforts to reduce pollution and contributing to more frequent and severe bleaching events on the reef.”
The full Op-Ed is available on the Sydney Morning Herald website.
