At the UN Oceans Conference in early June, Catherine Novelli spoke with Todd Woody, executive environment editor from Oceans Deeply, as part of an ongoing series of interviews with Ocean Elders. The feature, Obama’s Ocean Diplomat: U.S. Must Engage on Marine Issues, covered a range of topics including the conference as well as U.S. ocean policy.
During the interview, Ms. Novelli shared her perspective on U.S. engagement, “I think it’s really important for the U.S. to be involved. It’s important for the economy of the U.S. There are multiple millions of jobs in the United States connected to the ocean. Also, a lot of the solutions are going to come from technology, where we are a leader. Part of our thinking about the Our Ocean conferences was that we couldn’t do it by ourselves and we needed to galvanize lots of other actors. I think we had done that and they’re continuing to move, which I think is hugely important.”
